At the October 3 Culture Chat, former NFL player and nationally recognized motivational speaker Lou Alexander shared the importance of understanding your goals and core values in order to take your career where you want it to go. His topic was: Is Your Career in Alignment? Time to Straighten Out Your Goals, Roles, and Core Values.
During this interactive virtual program, Lou expanded on an Elvis Presley quote–“Values are like fingerprints. Nobody’s are the same, but you leave ‘em all over everything you do.”–and its relevance to professional development.
“Never be afraid to pay attention.” “Be a student first.” “Come to the table to have a conversation about solutions.” These were among dozens of poignant, practical tips shared by Lou with the coast-to-coast audience. Participants devoured his ready-to-apply strategies for career alignment and actively participated in breakout sessions that sparked new connections.
Lou offered four strategies to combat career stagnation:
- Clarify your career-oriented goals
- Continuously develop skills
- Be proactive about career transitions
- Openly communicate with management.
Lou emphasized the importance of knowing your value in order to feel empowered and achieve your career goals. He advised, “Know your value so you can feel empowered to show your value.”
True to the DLE’s mission, attendees logged off with new ideas for soaring. In their response to the program evaluation, many identified their biggest takeaway as this: understand and acknowledge your worth.
