This month’s Culture Chat, Preparing for the Path of Promotion: Practical Tips for Moving Up, addressed the age-old question: How do I move up in my workplace? However, today’s remote and hybrid offices put a new spin on the conversation.
DLE Alum Jesse Noll, who was recently promoted to Associate Director of Content and Experiences at Wavemaker, candidly shared his experiences about taking the initiative to get noticed and offered these tips:
- Be more visible. Expecting a high position role is difficult as a new recruit, but getting visibility in group settings is not. Visibility can come from effective collaboration, communication skills and actively building an internal network.
- Don’t be afraid to speak up. Senior managers are more approachable than you may first be led to believe. Improve communication skills by initiating frequent and open conversations, especially with colleagues whom you don’t know well or at all.
- Ask yourself: Does the company find value in my position? If you find that your specific role doesn’t provide the company with value, explore another department or program. Broadening your knowledge of your organization can make you a more valuable asset.
- Leverage your room to grow. If you’re a young professional and new to a position, your room to grow and adapt can be a valuable trait to employers and an effective point of leverage.
