HOT RESOURCES: STOP FEARING THE PHONE
July 24, 2024NAVIGATING CAREER CHANGE AND CHALLENGE: THREE DLE MEMBERS SHARE THEIR SUCCESS STORIES
July 24, 2024Prominent LinkedIn Leadership Voice Evan Hickok, founder of Lighthouse Leadership, exemplified the importance of management, delegation, and lifelong learning at the June 26 Culture Chat: The Shift You Need to Make When You Become a Leader.
Evan engaged a curious audience with his opening statistics: 60% of new managers fail in the first 24 months, and 82% of them never get trained.
His focus for the program was on two shifts that can differentiate a strong leader and help you stand out: delegation and feedback.
- Delegation: The ability to assign tasks clearly and effectively. As he succinctly stated, “If you don’t delegate, you run out of daylight, and your team runs out of work.”
- Feedback: Being able to give and receive feedback is essential to continuous learning and growth. Evan championed the importance of gaining feedback through in-person interactions that generate instant input. As he put it, “no one ever learned to ride a bike by watching a PowerPoint presentation!”
The Culture Chat program also provided stimulus for conversation and networking between attendees through 20-minute breakouts. Topics in these discussions included how to delegate effectively to interns, the difference between effective and ineffective managers, and the importance of time management. The benefits of direct feedback were readily achieved by attendees. As one DLE member summed up, “It’s interesting to hear how other individuals, companies, industries, and teams can have a management role but still be so different from person to person. I like hearing others’ perspectives.”
In his wrap-up comments, Evan stressed the value of constant growth and learning: “Remember that the present you is better than the past you, and the present you is not as good as the future you.”
